Just how effective is your corporate travel policy?

Most organisations have corporate travel policies in place. The giants of the business world have had them locked down for years, but surprisingly not all of them are effective, and many are not being enforced properly. By enforced we don’t mean placing unnecessary restrictions on your travellers, there will always be occasions when travellers will need to obtain authorisation to travel outside of policy. But therein lies the problem, many employees consider their company travel policy to be a guideline rather than a rule. Many travellers who have historically booked their own travel through various channels are still maintaining these behaviours. Perhaps it’s the lure of loyalty points from suppliers, or the option to pay on a company credit card while adding nectar points to a personal account. For some it might simply be a case of sticking to what they know, familiar websites or booking apps.
Whilst such practices continue, the task of tracking travellers, tracking spend, and establishing leverage becomes an arduous one. A recent US study reported that 80 percent of businesses surveyed found that 20 percent of air travel was being booked through non-company managed channels, and a whopping 50 percent of accommodation bookings were not being processed through their appointed travel providers.
Alarmingly the reason cited most frequently as to why travel had not been booked through a company appointed provider was because staff were unaware of who their company approved provider was. So the real problem lies with how businesses are communicating new travel policies to their staff. Traveleads recently started sending out a series of welcome communications to new clients introducing our services, advising their staff that as their appointed travel provider we are here to make the whole travel buying process easier. We outline the many benefits of using a single booking channel and ensure that all travellers and travel bookers are familiar with who we are. This ensures your business maintains a clear overview of its travel spend, and allows us to check all transactions are compliant.
