Renovations and Transformations at Leeds Station

by Traveleads | September 17, 2019 | Latest News On The Ground

If you have visited us at Traveleads HQ recently you may have travelled through Leeds Station and wondered what on earth was going on. The station is not looking it’s best at the moment however patience is key as the station is undergoing its biggest transformation in decades! With high speed rail on the horizon, the second busiest station outside London has been dubbed the future ‘gateway Yorkshire hub’, connecting cities across the North – and London – like never before.

Major improvements include:

  • Capacity enhancements – a new platform, track and upgraded signalling to improve services.
  • Redesigned, simpler track layout of platforms 1-6
  • Improved gateline machines in a straighter alignment to streamline passenger flow
  • Transformation  – the installation of a new transparent concourse roof to improve the look and feel of the station

Network Rail report that “the new transparent roof will be installed to improve passenger experience at one of the country’s busiest stations – and it’ll be ready in time for the UCI Road World Championships autumn 2019.”

Additionally, the main entrance New Station street will also be pedestrianised, with the pavement widened all the way down to the Queen’s Hotel.

With on-going works, we advise anyone travelling in or out of the station to check their service is operating before committing to the journey.

Network Rail has warned of service changes for the weekend of October 26-27 to allow work to continue on the construction of Platform Zero.

On the morning of Sunday October 27 – the day of the Leeds Abbey Dash race – there will be no trains in or out of Leeds Station, with rail replacement buses in place across all routes.

EDIT (02/10/19)

Work on a new roof at Leeds railway station has been completed.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “Those using Leeds station are already feeling the benefit, with much more natural light entering the main concourse and creating a more pleasant environment.”
