The best London airport hotels for early starts

Over 177 million passengers pass through London airports[1] annually, which can make navigating the crowds to rush to an early morning flight a bit of a nightmare. To make your lives a little easier, we’ve explored the most convenient, and comfortable, hotels near London Heathrow, Stanstead, Gatwick, Luton and London City airports to make those early mornings a little more bearable.

As well as distance, we’ve looked at hotels that’ll give you something a little extra such as sustainability features, soundproof walls (very important if you’re rising before the sun!) or support with checking in luggage the night before your flight.


Hotel Sofitel London Heathrow – 5*
Distance to terminal 5 – 0.2 miles and terminals 1, 2 and 3 – 1.7 miles

Sofitel Heathrow is the perfect choice if you’re flying from terminal 5, as it has direct access via a covered walkway. The hotel offers access to terminals 1- 4 via a shuttle bus however, there are closer hotels to those terminals.

The hotel is designed with tranquillity in mind, making it the ideal spot before an early morning flight. Inspired by the French ‘art of living’, the Sofitel also features calming sounds from an Antarctica-inspired fountain and trees dotted in the airy atrium adding to the zen-like atmosphere.

Distance to terminals 2 and 3 – 0.2 miles and terminal 4 – 0.8 miles

The Hilton Garden Inn is just a 5 minute bus ride from Heathrow Airport with its partner, Hoppa Bus. The onsite restaurant serves a varied menu in contemporary surroundings while beverages can be enjoyed in the stylish bar; there’s even a Costa Coffee onsite for a quick caffeine fix.

The hotel also offers a 24-hour pantry serving a range of refreshments, so you can have peace of mind you’ll find a snack prior to your flight – meanwhile, breakfast is served from 6am.

Radisson Blu Hotel London Stansted – 4*
Distance to terminal – 0.2 miles

A covered walkway is all that stands between The Radisson and the airport terminal, making it an ideal choice for Stansted passengers. Hotel Sofitel London Gatwick – 4*
Distance to north terminal – 0.1 miles and south terminal – 0.6 miles

Sofitel Gatwick offers a chic, French-inspired atrium and is just a step away from the north terminal via a short, covered walkway, while the south terminal can be reached via monorail. It features two bars perfect for winding down in the evening with cocktails and light bites plus three onsite restaurants offering a variety of cuisines; breakfast is also served here from 5.30am.

Bloc Hotel Gatwick– 3*
Distance to south terminal – 0.2 miles and north terminal – 0.7 miles

At Bloc Hotel guests are just a few steps away from the south terminal, while the north terminal can be accessed via monorail. Although there aren’t any onsite restaurants, the hotel has partnered with restaurants and bars within the airport to offer discounts – find the latest here.

Courtyard by Marriott Luton – 4*
Distance to terminal – 0.6 miles

The Courtyard, by Marriott, offers convenience and comfort plus it’s just a 15-minute walk from the terminal; a shuttle bus service is also available for which the reception can provide timings. Relaxation is at the heart of this hotel, whether it’s in a plush room or making the most of the outdoor patio and firepit area. Mealtimes are easy with the kitchen and bar serving all-day seasonal meals – or you can opt for the breakfast buffet pre-flight.

London City

DoubleTree by Hilton London Excel – 4*
Distance to the terminal – 0.5 miles

The Hilton London City is located on the banks of the historic Royal Docks. It offers a free shuttle service to the terminal and a midweek service to and from Canary Wharf – perfect if you’re heading straight from, or to, the office. The hotel has a bar and a restaurant that serves breakfast from 6.30am, while some of the spacious suites feature balconies offering stunning views across the waterfront, to take in the city before you jet off.
