Traveleads ‘Walk Around the World’ charity challenge. This week we have reached…

by Traveleads | January 23, 2019 | CSR

Last week saw our group of volunteers leaving Lausanne in Switzerland with absolutely no idea where they would end up. What an incredible week they have had. Over 1,400 miles later our team arrived in Moscow.

Moscow is the capital and the largest city in Russia, with 12.2 million residents living within the city limits and a total of 16.8 million within the urban area, making it the largest city entirely on the European continent. It is the northernmost and coldest megacity on earth, Moscow is served by a transit network, which includes four international airports, nine railway terminals, numerous trams, a monorail system and one of the deepest underground systems anywhere in the world. It is also one of the fastest growing tourist destinations according to the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index.

Anyone who still pictures shopping in Moscow as waiting in endless queues to choose from a limited selection of shoddily-made goods is in for a big surprise. The tone in the modern city is set by the big-spending, fashion-conscious super-rich, and downtown is full of gaudy and glamorous stores, selling everything from designer clothes to quirky souvenirs. Shopping in Moscow doesn’t have to break the bank, and a little research can lead to some truly original and uniquely Russian purchases. Check out the beautiful indoor GUM shopping arcades.

Moscow has changed almost beyond recognition since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The city now boasts hundreds of restaurants, bars, cafes and fast-food outlets, from cheap basement venues to top-class dining establishments with some of the best chefs in the world. Moscow can be an overwhelming experience for first time visitors – there’s just so much to see in this vast and vibrant city. The Kremlin and Red Square are always top of every visitors must see list, but these are just two of the many hi-lights the city has to offer, don’t be afraid to explore. Ask your hotel concierge for the best restaurant recommendations. The White Rabbit restaurant offers some fantastic panoramas of the city.

Even though the city’s theatrical heritage dates back only to the middle of the 18th century, to the founding of The Comedy House in the Preobrazhensky Village, and the Palace of Entertainments in the Kremlin, which used the fortress’s peasantry as actors. The theatrical world of the city has grown quickly and now, only 250 years later, there are around 70 theatres and a number of concert halls in the Russian capital. The Bolshoi Ballet company is amongst the most famous dance companies in the world.

Tickets for plays and concerts can be bought directly from theatre and box offices, or from kiosks called “Teatralnaya Kassa”, which can be found in underpasses, inside or near the entrances to almost every central metro station.

Moscow is a destination where it definitely pays to come prepared. Careful planning can make the all the difference, so before you arrange your visit make sure you have checked with one of our Traveleads experts to obtain the most up to date visa requirement information. We can take care of arranging your entire trip (Including your visa) so whether you are travelling for business or Leisure purposes, be sure to give us a call and we will be delighted to make sure your visit to Moscow is productive and wonderfully memorable.
