There is no doubt we are living in the age of the consumer. As consumers we are in charge. We go to the supermarket and gather, scan and pay for our goods without any interaction with anyone else, perhaps we avoid the supermarket altogether and simply order online – we get a personal discount code and our groceries are delivered to our door. We do our banking: check our balance, transfer funds, monitor our portfolio, track everything we bought for the last three months – all without having to speak to anyone.
But do we really enjoy all of that silence? John Donne famously wrote ‘No man is an Island’ – but that was back in 1624, before everything we could possible need was no more than just a click away.
