Tried and Tested – Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia is just a couple of hours flying time from the UK but a world away in terms of scenic beauty, fascinating culture, wine and gastronomy.  The sea, especially on the northern coast, is crystal clear.   Last week Sue Wood from our luxury leisure travel department was invited courtesy of ‘Azure’ to discover the island, including Costa Smerelda and at its epicentre, Porto Cervo, the Aga Khan’s playground for multi-millionaires – lucky lady!
First stop on Sue’s itinerary was the Relais Villa Del Golfo & Spa.  Winner of a Conde Nast Luxury Hotel Award in 2017 it oozes charm, simplicity and style.  While officially cited as a 4 star Superior hotel, a 5 star welcome awaits guests who come here to enjoy its wonderful authenticity and sense of place.  The property overlooks the Marine National Park just outside Cannigione (just 20 minutes drive from Porto Cervo) and offers stunning views of the ocean. Here the ceramics and textiles are all produced by local craftsmen and artisans, and the restaurant prides itself on using the best fresh local produce.

Unlike some hotels on the island the property doesn’t have its own private beach, however, it does have a sunbathing platform with bar service on the water’s edge, or guests can take the hotel shuttle to one of the nearby beaches where sun-loungers and umbrellas are available.  The Relais Villa Del Golfo & Spa as the name suggests has an on-site spa, which is small but beautifully appointed. The spa is popular with repeat guests, which is why we would advise booking ahead if you would like to enjoy the many treatments on offer.  The concierge here are simply wonderful – Sue tells us “They can arrange a wonderful programme of experiences for their guests, including a boat trip on the BonAria their own beautiful private yacht.  The BonAria is captained by a charming Australian who will regale you with anecdotes of his global adventures while helping you discover some of the smaller islands in the famous Archipelago of La Maddelena National Marine Park. For anyone brave enough to take a dip the water is … invigorating!”

Whether you simply want to rent a car for the day to go off exploring on your own, or enjoy a day of copious wine tasting – sampling the truly excellent Sardinian wines that are never exported – the concierge will be delighted to help you get the very most out of your time here.’
The Relais Villa Del Golfo & Spa can be reached from Cagliari within 2.5-3hrs by road, driving through spectacular scenery.

For those seeking the simplicity of a private beach paired with beautiful Sardinian style the Gabbiano Azzuro Hotel & Suites is just half an hours drive from Molara. The hotel has undergone a recent refurbishment and added some spectacular pool suites. Sue tells us ‘It’s a lovely property. Family run, the hotel is celebrating its 50th birthday in 2018. Guests can indulge on excellent food and wines, then walk it all off on one of the various hiking and walking trails – or perhaps just soak up the sun on the private beach.’

The Gabbiano Azzuro Hotel & Suites is just 5 minutes from the nearest town which has glorious shops, bars, a lovely marina and spectacular sunsets.
