Tried and Tested – WHISTLER, CANADA
by Traveleads | January 23, 2019 | Reviews
Whistler became a globally recognised destination when it was chosen to host the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, although it is now just as famous for its world-class hotels and the guests who stay there as it is for its world-class winter sports facilities. Paris Hilton, Renee Zellwegger and Demi Moore have all been seen there in recent years, and it’s not just movie stars who love the resort, it has even served as the playground for royalty. Prince Charles holidayed there with Prince William and Prince Harry, and the multi-billionaire Saudi Arabian Prince Alwaleed bin Talal was spotted there at a time when he and Bill Gates had just become the major shareholders in the Four Seasons luxury hotel chain. Last month Ivanka Trump decided to swap the Whitehouse for the white stuff and was seen with her husband and a Secret Service security team on the powder covered slopes of Whistler-Blackcomb.
Regularly billed as the number one ski resort in North America you can rest assured whenever you visit you’ll be in good company.
The Whistler Conference Centre makes the resort an ideal place to do business. International conventions and major events have taken place here attracting guest speakers from all over the world, including amongst others, notables such as Hilary Clinton.
Many companies are choosing out of city locations for hosting conferences and annual meetings to offer their people a break from the fast pace of city life. Away from the distractions of 21st century living people become energised and more creative, which is what makes Whistler such an ideal location. The sea to sky highway connects the international sprawling metropolis that is Vancouver to one of the most spectacular mountain resorts in the world. Prior to the launch of Microsoft XP its codename was ‘Whistler’ due to the fact that many of the senior designers and technicians spent time here conceptualising it.
With so many outdoor activities on offer there is never a shortage of break-out options – even in winter.
For visitors wanting to hit the slopes, and let’s face it who wouldn’t, lift passes can be bought online or at ticket booths located at the base of the two mountains (Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain). With over 8,170 acres Whistler is North America’s largest ski resort, so you might decide to extend your stay and add an extra day or two – no problem, you can top-up your lift passes online (Do this in advance to qualify for a discount on the standard daily rate). Book tickets and get more information here.
Both mountains are connected by the world record breaking ‘Peak to Peak’ gondola, the longest and highest lift in the world. Take a breathtaking 4.4 kilometer journey from one mountain to the other, and at no extra cost – the Peak to Peak gondola is included in the price of your lift tickets. With a range of ski and snowboard options to suit all levels, from complete beginners to the Olympic athletes that came here for the winter games, the mountains are a thrilling way to glide, slide and ride your way over some of the most scenic trails in the world.
But there’s so much more to do in Whistler.
With the help of Canadian Wilderness Adventures you can discover much more of the region including the beautiful Callaghan Valley. With snowshoes attached to your hiking boots you can set off on a journey following the old trappers paths through the forest. knowledgeable guides will take you deep into the ancient forest and along the traditional medicine trail, where you can sample healing teas made from plants and fungus that grow here. With so much to do in Whistler you’d be hard pressed not to work up an appetite, and with so many incredible dining opportunities available you might find yourself just as hard pressed to decide on where to eat. But why choose just one restaurant when you can try several, and all in the same evening!
Whistler Tasting Tours offer gourmet dining experiences that include all of the best places to eat. Small group dining tours are a great way to meet new people, network on an informal basis, or just hang out and get to know people you might never ordinarily meet. Your host for the evening will ensure everything has been planned ahead, so no waiting for tables at any of the restaurants, your service will be prioritised and the food … simply delicious! Your evening begins in the wine cellar of the Bearfoot Bistro, a favourite of the late comic and actor Robin Williams who ate here when he was in town. In the extensively stocked cellar you will learn the art of sabering Champagne – opening the bottle with a sword, which is surprisingly much easier and safer to do than you might imagine. Once the bottle is open …well it would be a shame to waste it!
The evening continues with visits to several restaurants, and includes hors d’ oeuvres, three courses with wine pairings (optional), chocolates and concludes with a cheese platter served with Ice-wine. A fantastic introduction to the restaurants of Whistler. For more details of the various dining tours available, prices, or to book click here. (Private group and large group tours are available on request)
After an evening of fine food, fine wine and fantastic company we expect you will want to get back out into the great outdoors. Why not discover the historic NorthAir Goldmine site for an adrenaline filled introduction to the backcountry – on snowmobiles!
