UBER takes another bites out of the big apple

Hailing a taxi in new York might become a thing of the past soon as ride-sharing app Uber has announced they are adding helicopter transfers for the first time in New York.

Trips between JFK airport and Lower Manhattan will begin next month (July 9th) although initially they will only be available to Uber’s Platinum and Diamond rewards programme members.

Flights will be operated by partner Heliflight and will cost between $200 and $225 per person. The journey time from JFK to the downtown helipad will be just 8 minutes and the fare also includes a conventional uber taxi to and from the heli-pad.

Users can book the service from 5 days in advance right up to just one hour before departure.

Uber claims the average journey will save travellers up to an hour compared with being stuck in city traffic.

Start-up company Blade, also provides a similar service but cover all three main New York area airports. Whether they will be able to compete long term with global giants Uber remains to be seen.
