This year, SAS is celebrating 70 years as Scandinavians’ preferred airline. The airline was founded 1st August 1946 when the three national airlines; Denmark’s Det Danske Luftfartselskab, Norway’s Det Norske Luftfartselskap, and Sweden’s Svensk Interkontinetal Lufttrafik AB, joined forces to create Scandinavian Airlines System, now the Scandinavian Airlines you know today. The first agreement covered only intercontinental travel from Europe to North and South America, but just five years later, in 1951, the three founders established the current SAS consortium and operated all international travel as SAS.
