American Airlines Launches Biometric Boarding Trial at LAX

American Airlines has become the latest carrier to launch a biometric boarding in which will span a 90-day trial. It is in operation at LAX’s Terminal 4, for customers travelling on selected international departures.

American Airlines reported that “When customers begin the boarding process, the facial recognition programme will scan an image of their face and send it to an existing cloud-based CBP database”.

British Airways Announces Two New Heathrow Routes

British Airways will launch two new routes from Heathrow to Ljubljana in Slovenia and Montpellier in France next summer.

Sean Doyle, BA Director of Network and Alliances, said: “We are gearing up for an exciting summer next year as we add more routes to our extensive network.

Tsunami Warning for Fiji Issued Following 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake

A Tsunami alert has been triggered as a result of the powerful earthquake that struck off the coast of New Caledonia on Wednesday afternoon, local time.

The tsunami warning is in effect for the region including the southern islands of Vanuatu with reports of waves up to three metres high.

Local authorities are advising an immediate evacuation from coastal areas to higher ground.

“You should remain there until the local authorities give the all clear,” the Foreign and Commonwealth Office declared this morning.

Manchester Airport to Welcome No Less than Four New Hotels by 2021

Manchester Evening News reports that plans are underway to construct at least four new hotels at Manchester airport by 2021. The airport is currently undergoing a £1 billion transformation programme in which to construct a new passenger pier and multi-story car park due to open in April 2019 and a Terminal 2 extension for 2020.

Manchester Evening News reports that the £180 million hotel district, which will be a part of Airport City, will include two Hilton hotels, a Holiday Inn and Ibis Budget – creating 1,200 new beds and 500 jobs.

Air France KLM Launches ‘Start-up Studio’

BigBlank is the name of Air France KLM groups new ‘start-up studio’ designed to explore travel trends and create companies ‘with innovative projects and high growth potential’. The group says the studio was set up to help it anticipate the needs of its customers and be a “pioneer in all new market segments”. The projects will be implemented by entrepreneurs who will draw on the experience of the Air France KLM group and its airlines. Each project will be provided with seed funding of up to €800,000.

Reubens Retreat to Renovate Main Building

We were delighted to hear the news that Reuben's Retreat is to start its next phase of building work early next year at its premises in Glossop, Derbyshire.

The charity was founded six years ago by Nicola and Mike Graham in memory of their son Reuben who died of a rare brain tumour ages 23 months. Travleads has been fundraising on behalf of the charity since it was nominated and chosen by our staff in 2017
